PMS Full Form: What Portfolio Management Services Mean
By Trilithon · Last reviewed · 5 min read
Quick answer: PMS stands for Portfolio Management Services. A SEBI-registered portfolio manager runs a stock portfolio on your behalf, using your own demat account. In India you need at least ₹50 lakh to start.
Full form: Portfolio Management Services. Regulator: SEBI (Portfolio Managers) Regulations, 2020. Minimum investment: ₹50 lakh per client. Where holdings sit: your own demat account.
What does PMS mean?
PMS is the short form used in Indian finance for a service where a professional manager looks after a portfolio of securities for one investor at a time. Your money is not blended into a common pool. The manager buys and sells shares for you, in your demat account, according to a stated strategy.
Since you own the shares directly, you can see each holding, and the manager can take your goals and risk comfort into account.
Only firms registered with SEBI as Portfolio Managers may offer this service, under the SEBI (Portfolio Managers) Regulations, 2020. For the full picture of how the service is set up and priced, see our main guide, PMS in India.

How does PMS work?
- Pick a strategy — Choose the approach that fits your goals, such as a diversified flexicap portfolio, a concentrated high-conviction one, or a multi-asset mix.
- Sign up and read the Disclosure Document — You complete KYC, sign the portfolio management agreement and receive the provider's Disclosure Document, which sets out the strategy, risks and charges.
- Fund the account with ₹50 lakh or more — The amount is invested as per the strategy. Securities are held in a demat account in your name.
- The manager runs the portfolio — Depending on the PMS type, the manager decides and trades, or recommends and waits for your approval.
- You track it through regular reports — Expect periodic performance statements, a list of holdings and review conversations with the provider.
Types of PMS
The three types differ mainly in who makes the final call on each trade.
Discretionary
The manager decides and executes without asking you each time. Your role: set the mandate, then monitor. Suits investors who want a hands-off experience.
Non-discretionary
The manager suggests trades and acts only after you approve. Your role: approve or decline each recommendation. Suits investors who want a say in every decision.
Advisory
The manager gives advice. You place the orders yourself. Your role: decide and execute. Suits investors who like to handle their own trades.
For help choosing between them, read Types of PMS in India and how to choose one.
What does PMS cost?
Charges vary by provider and are listed in each Disclosure Document. Usual components: management fee, performance fee, exit load, and other expenses such as brokerage, custody, audit, registrar and statutory charges.
Compare the total cost you would pay over a year, not only the headline management fee. Estimate it with our PMS fee calculator or read how PMS fees work.

Frequently asked questions
What is the full form of PMS?
PMS stands for Portfolio Management Services. In India it is an investment service regulated by SEBI under the SEBI (Portfolio Managers) Regulations, 2020.
What is the minimum investment in PMS in India?
SEBI requires a minimum investment of ₹50 lakh per client in a PMS.
How is PMS different from a mutual fund?
In a PMS the securities sit in your own demat account and the portfolio can be tailored to you. A mutual fund pools money from many investors into one scheme and you hold units. PMS also needs a far higher minimum investment.
What are the types of PMS?
There are three types. In a discretionary PMS the manager takes the investment decisions for you. In a non-discretionary PMS the manager recommends and you approve each trade. In an advisory PMS the manager only advises and you place the trades yourself.
Is PMS safe?
PMS providers are regulated by SEBI and your securities are held in your own demat account. It is still a market-linked investment, returns are not guaranteed, and you can lose part or all of your capital.
How is PMS taxed?
Because the securities are held in your name, gains are generally taxed in your hands as short-term or long-term capital gains, based on how long each security was held. Tax treatment depends on your circumstances, so please consult a tax advisor.
How do I check whether a PMS provider is registered?
Search for the provider's name or its registration number (which starts with INP) on sebi.gov.in, in the Portfolio Managers list under Recognised Intermediaries.
